The Good Shepherd Ministry
There are various ways to help at Good Shepherd. Did you know that some of our St. Andrew’s parishioners pick up food at grocery stores? Mike Larson shares a story called “A Day in the Life of a Van Driver.”
“ When Margaret and I moved to Wilmington from Cape Carteret and being retired, we wanted something meaningful to occupy our time. Ophelia Hart, a parishioner, introduced us to Good Shepherd. I have been driving Good Shepherd vans for 8 years and have collected groceries at most of the stores in the area. Currently my route is to collect at Whole Foods and Trader Joes. On Thursday and Friday I arrive at Good Shepherd at about 8:30, get my keys and collect the empty Whole Food containers, load them in the big van and head for Whole Foods. I park in the rear at the loading dock, ring the bell on the loading dock door and wait for the good folks at Whole Foods to bring out the containers of food. I load them in the van on the side, return the empties and head for Trader Joes. I also park at their loading dock on the left side of the building. Normally shopping carts with boxes of groceries are awaiting me. I load them in the rear of the van and may press the back door buzzer to let them know that I'm there and they need to bring out the frozen and refrigerated foods. I load them. Trader Joes normally has bread in plastic bags and flowers that Whole Foods doesn't have. All the people I interface with are very nice hard working folks. I enjoy my time with them. Once loaded, I drive back to Good Shepherd where I normally help unload the food containers onto carts which are then pushed into Second Helpings for weighing and sorting. I log in my van after parking. On Fridays I go to the kitchen to see Margaret, my wife. All the people there are great and very good workers. Working at Good Shepherd has been and is a very satisfying experience. ”
