History

St. Andrew's On-the-Sound Episcopal Church

St. Andrew's On-the-Sound was built in 1923 in a Spanish mission style of architecture. The church is visible, as well as attractive to the busy traffic that passes by the intersection of Oleander Avenue and Wrightsville Avenue in one of the fastest growing areas of Wilmington. St. Andrew's has a large attendance among those visiting Wrightsville Beach during the summer months.

The church building was dedicated in April, 1924, and in 1980, the nave of the church was enlarged to its present size. It seats approximately 220 people and has a large parish hall. Attached to the parish hall is a kitchen, stage and bathrooms. Also on church property is a rectory that has been converted into church offices, a cemetery and a raised garden for the internment of ashes. The Christian Education building contains four classrooms which have folding partitions that increase the number of classrooms. A large, brightly colored, well-equipped nursery has its own bath and changing room. An attractive courtyard offers light and serenity to the glass-doored conference room which seats twelve comfortably.
